What Is New GRA?
New GRA sits in the Bodija axis of Ibadan, developed as an upmarket residential estate. Unlike the busier, more chaotic parts of the city, New GRA has wide, paved roads, planned compounds, and a noticeably quieter atmosphere during the day. Most of the city's corporate offices, embassies, and high-end shortlet apartments are located here or nearby.
It's the neighbourhood you want when you're visiting Ibadan for business, a wedding, or a relaxed family stay and you'd rather not deal with traffic-heavy, noisy surroundings.
Is New GRA Safe?
Yes — New GRA is widely regarded as one of the safest areas in Ibadan. A few reasons:
- Estate security: Most streets have private security operatives and estate management committees.
- Well-lit roads: Street lighting is more reliable here than in other parts of the city.
- Low street crime: The area's relative affluence means street harassment and petty crime are rare compared to the city centre.
Standard precautions still apply — don't walk alone late at night, use trusted transport, and keep valuables out of sight. But day-to-day movement within New GRA is comfortable and uneventful for most visitors.
Getting Around
From the airport: Ibadan's domestic airport is roughly 20–30 minutes away depending on traffic. Bolt and inDriver are both active in Ibadan and work reliably within New GRA. Most shortlet hosts (including us) can also arrange airport pickup on request.
Within the city: Bolt is the easiest option for getting around. Yellow commercial cabs are available if you're comfortable negotiating fares — always agree on the price before you enter. Okadas (motorcycle taxis) are fast but not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with Ibadan roads.
Traffic: Ibadan traffic is nowhere near Lagos levels, but mornings (7–9am) and evenings (4–7pm) around the MKO Abiola Way axis can slow things down. If you have an appointment, leave early.
Dining in New GRA
New GRA has a solid range of eating options within 5–15 minutes of most shortlet apartments.
Local Nigerian Food
Ibadan is known for its bold, unpretentious Nigerian cooking. Amala and ewedu is the city's signature dish — soft yam flour dough served with a viscous vegetable soup and gbegiri (bean soup), usually with assorted meat. You'll find joints serving this all over the area. Ask any local to point you to their favourite — everybody has a strong opinion.
Grills and Suya
Evening suya spots set up along major roads from around 5pm. Suya (spiced grilled beef skewers) here is a staple. Look for spots that draw a crowd — that's always a good sign.
Sit-Down Restaurants
The Bodija–New GRA corridor has a growing number of proper sit-down restaurants offering continental, Chinese, and intercontinental menus. Delivery apps (Chowdeck, Bolt Food) also serve the area, so room dining is easy to arrange if you'd rather not go out.
Breakfast
Many shortlet guests cook in-apartment (our kitchens are fully equipped), but if you want a café morning, a few coffee-and-breakfast spots have opened in the area in recent years. Ask us for current recommendations on arrival.
Nightlife
New GRA and its surrounding areas have more nightlife options than most visitors expect.
Lounges and bars: Several upscale lounges operate within a 10-minute drive. These typically pick up from 9pm on weekends. Supreme Apartments' own Exclusive Lounge is available for private bookings — a good option if you'd prefer something curated rather than going out.
Event centres: Ibadan has a busy social calendar, especially for weddings and celebrations. If you're attending an event, New GRA's central position means most major venues (Jogor Centre, Premier Hotel, Adamasingba) are within 15–25 minutes.
What to avoid: Open-air bars along some secondary roads can get rowdy late at night. Stick to known venues or ask your host for current recommendations.
What to Do During the Day
Ibadan has more going on than most visitors realise.
- University of Ibadan: Nigeria's oldest university has a beautiful, expansive campus. The UI Zoo and Botanical Gardens are open to visitors — worth an afternoon.
- Cocoa House: Once the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa, this Ibadan landmark is an easy visit if you're near Ring Road.
- Dugbe Market: If you want fabric, local goods, or just an immersive Nigerian market experience, Dugbe is the place. Go in the morning, go with a local if possible.
- Trans-Amusement Park: A family-friendly option if you're travelling with children.
- Day trip to Lagos: Ibadan is 2 hours from Lagos on the expressway (less on the train). The SGR train service makes for a comfortable day trip if you want city buzz without staying there.
